What is a Non-Ducted, Mini-Split Heating and Cooling System?
The most often asked question during the 2014 Tour of Homes this July had do with the workings of the mini-split heating and cooling system in our Net Zero Ready Home on Jones Rd in Mid-town Bend.
Here are the answers to your questions:
- Do these units heat and cool the home?
Yes, these inverter-driven compressor systems use only the exact amount of energy needed to cool or heat an area. So you can save energy and money while enjoying complete control over your comfort year-round.
- Are there ducts that bring in air from outside? No, these systems are ductless and therefore do not have to heat or cool air from outside. Nor do you lose energy through ducting that may be placed in unconditioned spaces like attics or crawl spaces. Heated or cooled liquid from the outdoor compressor unit is brought inside to the indoor wall unit through a conduit. The interior room air is drawn into the wall unit, filtered, and then delivered at the desired set temperature to your room. The filters are removable and washable to keep your air clean and fresh.
- How do you control the temperature? Each in door unit has a remote controller. The controller is very simple, almost identical to your car heater/air conditioner controls. Zone control is one of the main technological benefits our systems offer, enabling you to control the temperature within any space that has an indoor unit installed.
- How does it move the air around from room to room? The unit will continue to push air into the living space until the returning air is the same temperature as the set point. The I-see™ Sensor scans the lower portions of the room to detect hot or cold spots and to adjust temperature and airflow accordingly to maintain consistent comfort. SolAire also installs an Energy Recovery Ventilator that is constantly moving fresh air into the home and expelling stale air out. This helps distribute the heated or cooled air from the mini-split unit throughout the home.
